About

Shion Guha (like Lion but with a “Sh” ) is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Information and cross-appointed to the Department of Computer Science at the University of Toronto, where he directs the Human-Centered Data Science (HCDS) Lab.

His work focuses on the “friction” between technical systems and public policy, specifically auditing how algorithms function in real-world public sector agencies. He investigates where data science breaks down when applied to high stakes environments such as child welfare, healthcare, higher education and housing.

He is a co-author of the foundational text Human-Centered Data Science: An Introduction (MIT Press, 2022), which defined the methodologies for integrating critical, interpretive qualitative inquiry with technical, computational quantitative methods.

Currently, Shion is also a Visiting Senior Research Scientist at Parkview, where he is conducting field research on algorithmic risk assessment in healthcare environments. He is synthesizing these findings for his next manuscript on Public Interest Technology.
